Overview of the Aluminum Extrusion Process

Design

The first step in producing custom aluminum extrusion profiles is to create a design that meets the customer’s requirements. This includes determining the overall shape, size, and dimensional specifications of the extruded profile. 

Die Design

 Once the design is finalized, a die will be designed according to the shape and specifications of the desired extruded profile. The die may be created in-house or outsourced to a third-party die maker.

Raw Material

After the die is completed, raw aluminum material is procured. The aluminum can come in various forms, such as aluminum billets or aluminum logs. The choice of raw material is based on the desired performance characteristics of the final product.

 Billet Heating

The aluminum billets are then heated to a specific temperature to make them easier to extrude. This process is called billet heating and is necessary to make the aluminum more ductile and workable.

Extrusion

 The heated aluminum billets are then fed into the extrusion press. The extrusion press uses high pressure to force the molten aluminum through the die. As the aluminum passes through the die, it takes on the shape of the die and comes out of the press as a continuous profile.

Cutting

Once the aluminum extrusion profiles are produced, they can be cut to the desired length, using a saw or automatic cutting machine.

Surface Treatment

The aluminum extrusion profiles can be treated for specific applications. Depending on the desired properties of the final product, the surface of the extruded profile may be treated with anodizing, powder coating, painting, or other processes to improve its resistance to corrosion, wear and tear, or improve its appearance.

Inspection

After the aluminum extrusion profiles are produced and treated, they undergo a final inspection to ensure that they meet the customer’s specifications.
